Ceggia inhabitants are called 'ciliensi', a name deriving from Latin 'cilium', that means 'edge', just because of the their town's former position on the seaside.
As almost all towns of the 'Basso Piave' Ceggia was terribly damaged too in the Autumn of 1917 during the First World War. Nevertheless the rebuilding first and the land reclamation works then brought about a new welfare.
Ceggia is situated midway between the Piave and Livenza rivers, on the way from San Dona' di Piave to Portogruaro. It is today a nice town, surrounded by fruitful farmlands, but once it was covered by wood, against which lapped the lagoon, separating the flat country from the Adriatic Sea.
Thanks to the sugar beet cultivation a big sugar mill arose.
Today the refinery isn't working anymore, but bears witness to the activity - also industrial - of this area during the 20th century and often is the stage for artistic events.
