The photographic Fund of Tomaso Filippi reached, in 1982, the Santi Giovanni and Paolo hospice, and then the IRE, by donation of the photographer’s youngest daughter, Elvira, who spent her last years in the Institute.
The fund, ordered since 1984 by IRE, has been sporadically used for studies and historical essays on Venice which highlighted, on one hand, its scientific potential but at the same time the need to investigate it thoroughly. The most modern IT methodologies have made it possible to analytically index the material according to national laws.
The whole material covers the years from 1885 to 1920 and its composed by negatives on glass plates, positives on paper and glass, stereoscopic negatives, postcards. Moreover there are photographic equipment for filming and dark room, printing and editing material, commercial documents and personal papers related to the professional activity and private life of Filippi and his three daughters.
The meaning of an archive, to preserve and bring memory to the present, lays in its public accessibility. The material must therefore be accurately catalogued and this is the reason why a choice has been made to work on an electronic catalogue of the Fund, that joins scientific accuracy and interactive itineraries for users.
