Lio Piccolo
From Cavallino to Treporti
Through the historic towns of the littoral
Passing the fishing reaches
On this itinerary we once again find the main features of the Cavallino environment and the sharp contrasts, ranging from lagoon landscapes to the tranquillity of market gardens, and concludes there where the sea pans out near the locks interconnecting the river and the lagoon. Along the route we touch upon the old centre of Cavallino and immerse ourselves in the typical lagoon landscape of the Falconera fishing reaches (perhaps so called because of the migratory falcons that used to be captured there in the Middle Ages) and Musestre, habitat of typical birds like terns, royal seagulls, wild ducks, and marsh harrie.
Coasting along the banks the historic Casson Canal, we come to the Locks of Cavallino, which link the Sile-Piave to the Casson Canal and the Pordelio Canal.
The Canal Lock that was built here grew in commercial importance starting from the end of the 16th century. In 1632 the government of the Serenissima had a plaque set up on the facade of the lock's Customs House, indicating the tolls for each class of vessel, which shows how heavy traffic was in this area.
Means of transport: by bicycle
Route: Cavallino - Via Pordelio - Musestre Valley - Via Pordelio - Il Vallone - Via Fausta - Via Baracca - Cavallino Bridge - Casson Canal - Cavallino.
Distance: about 13 km.
Estimated time: about 2 hours (stops not included).
Viability: the excursion takes place on an asphalt road for about half of the way; the other half is mainly dirt roads and embankments, which in some cases have broken surfaces.
Points of support: bars, restaurants and shops in the centre of Cavallino and at Ca' di Valle; bars along Via Pordelio; the inn at the Cavallino Locks.
Suggested period: from March to November.
Clothing: comfortable windproof outdoor wear, as the wind is often strong in the intermediate seasons.
Headgear recommended.
Warning: beware of the car traffic along the roads, i.e. Via Pordelio and Via Fausta. Mosquitoes are likely to be found in rural areas.
